In the first years of the camp’s operation the cafeteria served only as a kitchen where the prisoners’ food was prepared.The latter took their personal utensils, bowl and aluminum spoon and took their respective ration at the camp’s kitchen.As the food was very poor, prisoners frequently cooked themselves, too, at the barracks called private kitchen, a small room where they lit fire with over three stones or something similar, placed an old pot or pan their relatives may have brought them and cooked something out of the food they were allowed to receive from their families.  The private kitchen and consumption of foods coming from the family continued almost throughout the period of the camp’s operation and many witnesses say that this food brought to them by their families kept them alive and saved their lives.

In the sleeping areas, prisoners secretly distributed Albanian translated works, which were not allowed by camp command. They were copied and re-copied and prisoners circulated them to be read by everyone. Convicted writers and poets also circulated their poems. Often police officers in the camp did detailed checks and if they were caught, these were cause for re-conviction. That was why manuscripts were often hidden in the mine, in different places like airing pipes or special spots created by prisoners themselves in the tunnels’ wooden reinforcement structure.

According to collected testimonies, the camp’s sleeping areas had other bed placement systems, too, such as in this sketch.  In some operating periods of this camp, when there was a large number of incomig prisoners, up to 50 people were forced to stay in one room.Prisoners also held their personal belongings and moccasins or clogs (shoes were rare) that they wore in the camp’s premises.Among the personal belongings, there were:2 pairs of clothes, 1 aluminum or plastic canteen, 1 toothbrush, 1 notebook, 1 bowl, 1 aluminum tablespoon, 1 mattress, blanket and sheet.  The wooden stairs to climb the upper beds were everywhere in the sleepng area.

Showers were in front of toilets.Mainly in the first years, but also in the later stages, there was no hot water in the camp and the showers only brought the mountain’s icy water.Prisoners mainly washed with water, which they warmed themselves in metal tubs in the private kitchens.They then washed with the warmed water by pouring it on their bodies themselves with whatever vessel they had.Showers, like the toilets, were open and doorless.Prisoners were forced to wash in these conditions of utter lack of intimacy.

If a convict was serving the last days of his sentence, he was never sure he would really be released. It was not uncommon for Spaç convicts to be arrested in the camp, too, sent to the interrogation office at Rrëshen’s Interior Branch and be judged on all kinds of charges, such as escape attempt, agitation and propaganda, violence towards prison command etc. Charges were almost always trumped up and evidence was collected by spy inmates. The majority of re-convictions were for agitation and propaganda.
