In Spaç, prisoners died from mine accidents, diseases or executions by guard soldiers in escape attempts. Their bodies were not returned to their families, instead they were buried by camp command in a place that was kept secret during the years of dictatorship and after the regime’s fall this burial site was found out to have been in Shpal, Mirdita. No name was put on the prisoners’ graves, only a number. Family members have found a part of their relatives’ graves in Spaç Camp according to the prisoner’s data, which were placed in a small glass bottle in the grave, near the victim’s head.

In area no. 2 of Spaç, pyrite extraction was performed, whereas in area no. 1 and no. 3, there was copper extraction.  In all areas, each group’s (made of one miner and two carters) daily target was the extraction of seven wagons of mineral, cleaning the front from inert material, reinforcing the whole area where they had worked, whereas the opening of holes was then done by a free miner, i.e., not imprisoned, as the process included the use of explosive devices which were never entrusted on a prisoner for security reasons.  This free miner would fill the holes with explosives to be detonated for the following shift. The first shift ended after all this work processes had been closed by the three-prisoner group.

In the few free time remaining after the prisoner’s routin upon returning to the camp, so-called ajrim (literally: “airing”) was allowed, meaning a walk on the top of the toilet room, where roll call was done, too. This was also the freest area for prisoners as they could converse without any possibility for spies to capture their exchanges, as often happened in sleeping rooms.

This is a view of the prisoners’ cafeteria in the ‘70s.After performing their morning routine in the toilet, prisoners who started first shift would hurry to the cafeteria to have breakfast and go to work.   At 6:00 am, all prisoners who’d work first shift had to have finished their breakfast and be ready to go to the tunnels.For the first shift that worked in the mines, breakfast was soup with seasonal vegetables and sometimes a little meat.But this menu did not apply to those working above ground or in supporting sectors, as they had a poorer diet and they never had meat.

In the first years of the camp’s operation, prisoners ate wherever they could, as there was no dedicated area to eat in.According to Shkëlqim Abazi’s testimony, prisoners gathered in groups and consumed their food wherever they could in the areas near the barracks serving as a kitchen.
