At Spaç Camp there was a store, a 4x4m building near the smith’s. Prisoners, referring to the seller’s name, called it Ndue’s store. The store was state-owned and the seller was a free man who came to the camp every day. In ShkëlqimAbazi’s testimony, it is indicated that “…in Spaç’s Revolt, political prisoners undertook not to touch the store, even if people would be starving. They guarded it to make sure nobody attacked it. So, it wasn’t touched.”

The store often sold food products like sugar, flour, rice, oil. There were also some stationeries, like pencils, pens, notebooks, envelopes, etc.

But how did prisoners buy when physical money was prohibited in camp? ShkëlqimAbazi explains in his testimony: “We had no money in the physical sense. We had imaginary money if we can call it that. Our money existed in the accountant’s office, who marked the money prisoners earned by work or those their families brought. Until 1972, the law in force dictated that no matter how much you worked, the most you can earn is 18 leks. The accountant noted the income collected for each prisoner. Before going to the store you placed the order at the accountant: e.g., he would order 1 kg of sugar, oil, pasta, for which he would get a coupon. He’d open the records and check: Shkëlqim has, let’s say, 1,000 leks. Deduct 500 leks, and 500 leks remain. If the balance didn’t match, you didn’t get a coupon. This was the money we used: the coupon.”

In rare cases when there was little time before the evening, prisoners spent their time with conversations, simple games, hidden readings, and foreign language learning in secret.  Foreign language learning was prohibited by the camp’s command. This accusation was frequently collected by depositions of spies who had infiltrated in the sleeping rooms and were often used as evidence to re-convict prisoners.

After wagons were manually loaded, they were also pushed by hands for a distance of one kilometer to the exit of the tunnel on large heaps that were then transported through a mechanism on trucks. The prisoner returned to the work front with an empty wagon or wooden bodies with which he fortified the area of explosion, after all of the material was extracted.  The routine of description of this road with the wagon full of mineral and return to the front was done seven times per shift.

Spaç Prison Camp had an infirmary with eight beds. This infirmary was designed to meet all of the camp’s health needs. But referring to some periods of high intake of patients (wounded in accidents, with a cold, poisoning from food or underground gases in tunnels, chronic diseases or many other health concerns), the infirmary didn’t meet even the most minimal needs of prisoners.

Sinks were found at the end of the rectangular barracks that served as a toilet, along with the entrance.To go there, you had to pass the doorless toilets and showers, while other prisoners could be using them.The sink was a common one for everyone, made of cement in the shape of a long washtub, over and parallel to which a water pipe was installed with several consecutive holes out of which cold water ran and poured on the washtub.That’s where prisoners washed their faces, or even feet.There was never any hot water.
