Prison No. 9 of Berat was constructed in an old building. It functioned during October 1944 –
1 October 1953, and had a large concentration of ‘enemies of the people’. According to the
People’s Defence Division data, 16 people served in the Berat Prison (14 soldiers, two non-
commissioned officers). Although the prison’s capacity amounted to 216 people in 1950, there
were around 490 convicts in this prison in 1950.
Tuberculosis was the predominant disease according to the 1950s records. The prison and the
Gjirokastra Prison were closed by a letter dated 26 September 1953 from the Ministry of Internal
Affairs. Prisoners and staff were transferred to the Vlora Prison. The transfer of prisoners was
completed on 30 September 1953.
