The Durrës Prison was built in an old building inherited from the kingdom’s times. According to the People’s Defence Division data, the Durrës Prison was staffed by 26 people (22 soldiers, four non-commissioned officers, one officer). Catholic cleric Vinçens Prenushi was one of the prisoners who died in this prison in 1949.

According to a 1950 report, the prison was considered an unsuitable building. Tuberculosis was the predominant disease. The capacity of the prison was around 220 people. In 1950 there were about 400 prisoners. The Durrës Prison was closed in February 1953, after its prisoners formed Camp No. 7 in Tirana.
