From 1944 to 1960, it had the names Prison No. 15 and Re-education Unit No. 317. It was closed for a period of time and reopened in 1962-1964 as Unit No. 318.
When communists came in power, Prison No. 15 was used for political convicts. The prison had been constructed by the French in 1916 and served for this purpose.
The prison’s capacity was around 300 people.
In 1950, there were around 850 convicts in the unit.
In 1954, it had 161 political convicts. In 1957, there were 100 political and 95 ordinary convicts. Tuberculosis and chronic bronchitis were the predominant diseases in 1950. In 1954, the prison only held the prisoners of Korça’s County, with around 160 prisoners. In 1957 there were 106 political and 100 ordinary convicts in this prison. In 1958, 96 political and 83 ordinary convicts served their sentences there.
